Paying It Forward: Lou and Carol Della Penna
For more than 50 years, Lou and Carol Della Penna have had a special relationship with Fox Chase Cancer Center. In the 1960s, their journey began as Carol underwent thyroid surgery. Twenty years later, her parents underwent breast and prostate surgeries. Fortunately, all were benign.
By the fall of 1993, Lou was convinced he had throat cancer. After a comprehensive exam and testing, John A. (Drew) Ridge, MD, PhD, FACS, Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, diagnosed Lou with reflux, which was a relief. However, before Lou left the office, Dr. Ridge said, “You came here for a reason. Let’s review your medical history again.”

Dr. Ridge noticed Lou had been treated for a kidney stone. He consulted with Richard E. Greenberg, MD, FACS, who noticed a shadow on Lou’s left kidney, although Lou had no symptoms. A CT scan revealed stage 3 kidney cancer. Dr. Greenberg surgically removed the diseased organ and continued to see Lou every six months for follow-up. Years later, Lou’s daughter, Liz, was successfully treated for thyroid cancer at Fox Chase.
To express their appreciation to Fox Chase, the Della Pennas established a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) that would pay them an annual income and provide much-needed funds for kidney cancer research. Upon their passing, the entire fund will be directed to Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Lou quickly became a fixture of the Fox Chase community and joined the Board of Directors, lending his business acumen to the institution. He and Carol have served as Wine Chairs for Fox Chase’s signature benefit and wine auction, In Vino Vita since its inception. They are shining examples of those who “pay it forward” to help others.
In 2012, Lou and Carol established two endowed chairs to be held by Dr. Ridge and Dr. Greenberg. They believe that if these men hadn’t stepped into his life, Lou would not be here today. That’s why they support Fox Chase philanthropically through planned giving.
